Preschool Craft Stick Butterflies
by Rachel Paxton
These whimsical butterflies are a fun preschool craft for springtime or any time of year. Your child can decorate his butterfly in a variety of ways, with paint, markers, crayons, or even stickers, whatever you have on hand. Here is what you will need:
- Wooden craft sticks
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Craft paints, markers, or crayons
- Pipe cleaners
- Google eyes
I didn’t use a pattern to cut out the butterfly’s wings. I cut two large hearts out of construction paper, letting my boys choose the colors for their wings.
Next the boys decorated their butterfly wings. Of course they wanted to use paints, so I put a little paint on a paper plate for them. After your child has finished painting the wings, set them aside to dry. Also have your child decorate the wooden craft stick.
Next cut two pieces of pipe cleaner, approximately 2 inches each. Bend the pipe cleaners into the shape of antennae and glue them to the top of the wooden craft stick. You might need a drop of glue from a hot glue gun to get it to stick really well.
Now have your child use the glue to put on the google eyes.
When the craft stick and wings are dry, your child can glue the wings to the back of the stick.
That’s all there is to it. These butterflies are fun to make if you and your children are doing a preschool butterfly science activity. They also look great in a large window!
